Praxis: The First Journal for Work-Based Learning Arrives November 2025

It is official — Praxis: The Work-Based Learning Journal arrives in 2025.

In November 2025, the inaugural issue will introduce the world’s first journal dedicated entirely to work-based learning as a field of knowledge.

Praxis is not another training magazine. It is not a microcredential newsletter. Instead, it establishes a scholarly, practitioner-driven, open-access journal that recognizes work-based learning as its own transdisciplinary domain. At the same time, it bridges research, practice, and system-level innovation across sectors and regions.

Recognizing Work-Based Learning as a Field of Knowledge

Work-based learning has always extended beyond training methods. It produces knowledge through contribution, recognition, and social trust. However, until now, the field has lacked a dedicated publication space that reflects that reality.

Praxis changes that.

The journal will:

  • Advance work-based learning as a standalone transdisciplinary domain
  • Bring together peer-reviewed research, practitioner insight, and system-level commentary in one place
  • Elevate the voices of those designing, delivering, and recognizing work-based learning globally

Together, these elements create a shared platform where the field can define itself on its own terms.

Building Infrastructure for a Global Research Community

The Council Advancing Work-Based Learning (CAWBL) has submitted Praxis for International Standard Serial Number (ISSN) registration through Library and Archives Canada, with the inaugural issue scheduled for November 2025.

Praxis will publish six issues each year:

  • Three core issues covering the breadth of work-based learning scholarship and practice
  • Three special editions focused on CAWBL’s core tenets:
  • Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
  • Competency-Based Education (CBE)
  • Heutagogical practice

Importantly, Praxis strengthens the research infrastructure that supports learning through contribution at scale.

Open Access and Author-Centred by Design

Praxis places accessibility and participation at the centre of its publishing model. The journal will provide:

  • Fully open access publication in PDF and HTML formats
  • DOI assignment for every article
  • Author-retained copyright
  • Multilingual abstracts where appropriate

Praxis will launch on the Open Journal Systems platform through Simon Fraser University, with the site going live in late September 2025:

Why This Matters Now

Across sectors, the work-based learning community continues to call for a platform that recognizes both practice and scholarship without forcing them into frameworks designed for other educational models.

Praxis responds directly to that need.

Rather than simply reporting on work-based learning, the journal will help shape its future as a recognized field of research, policy, and practice.

What’s Next

Several milestones will follow quickly:

  • Call for papers: September 2025
  • Editorial board announcement: Fall 2025
  • Inaugural issue: November 2025
